You can fit SO much goodness into one glass, and they are so simple to make – chuck ingredients into a blender – wait 30secs and you have a delicious drinkable meal/snack.
Perfect for when you are on the go/extra hungry/too lazy to cook (A.K.A all the time)
I have an entire cupboard of amazing smoothie add-ins, e.g. healthy fats such as coconut oil or flaxseed or nutrient powerhouses such as spirulina.
BUT my new favourite smoothie addition is a dose of raw potato starch.
Yep, potato smoothie.
Sounds gross right?
Trust me. It’s not. It is tasteless and doesn’t affect the smoothie at all. BUT it is a super awesome addition.
For anyone who doesn’t know, raw potato starch is a form of resistant starch, this is a type of starch which we can’t actually digest – our bodies cannot break it down.
So… why put it in your smoothie??
While resistant starch is not a viable food source for us, it is a freaking buffet of goodness for the billions of good bacteria that live in our gut (think, the equivalent of you getting a big-ass green smoothie with coconut oil).
These bacteria carry out a HUGE amount of supportive functions and can influence everything from digestion to weight loss to mental health, in fact… science is still discovering the awesome power that they wield over our health.
Their superpower functions include:
- Helping us absorb certain vitamins and minerals
- Maintains good digestion of all food, hence limiting bloat and other nasty indigestion symptoms
- Supports your immune system
- Influence body fat levels
- Affect anxiety levels/depressions
And if they aren’t getting fed, then they aren’t going to be doing a good job with the above. But ensure that you treat them to a dose of their favourite food and they will seriously thank you.
I add around 1/2 tbsp a day to a smoothie (or any drink) and have felt some immediate effects in terms of better digestion, less bloat etc.
The best bit? It is super cheap, not like one of these superfood which cost $$$$$! I pick mine up from Amazon.
