It has literally become my go-to magic ingredient as it calms your mind and soothes your entire body plus has a ton (and I mean a ton) of amazing health benefits.
Did you know that the majority of people are deficient in magnesium?
Studies have shown that only a teeny percentage of people get enough magnesium day-to-day. Even if you feel fine then you can still be deficient, which is a major problem!
Magnesium is absolutely crucial to good health; this source states:
Magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems that regulate diverse biochemical reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation.
Basically, if you are deficient in magnesium, your body can’t function properly.
So, why are people not getting enough magnesium??
Modern farming practises have massively damaged the quality of our soil. In order to maximise food production, we intensively grow and harvest food, stripping minerals from the soil.
Given that plants take nutrients from the soil, animals eat plants, and all our food comes from plants and animals.
Less nutrients in the soil = less nutritious food
Hence, we are getting much less magnesium in our diets than we used to.
Additionally, modern living actively depletes your body of magnesium e.g. drinking alcohol/caffeine, stress or sweating are all ways to rid your body of this vital mineral.
So, get your sweat-sessions in (and I hope you do), then you are going to need even more than your average-on-the-couch Jane.
Enter magnesium oil….
Why exactly is magnesium oil amazeballs?
- Magnesium helps you bounce back after a tough workout! It is a muscle relaxant, so using it after training will not only helps to replace lost magnesium (through sweating), but it can also help you recover quicker!
- It helps you sleep! Magnesium oil is the perfect way to wind down before bed as will help you drift off quickly, plus it can make your dreams more vivid.
- It chills you out. Magnesium is used by your body for mood regulation – particularly anxiety – so it is awesome for when you are feelin a lil stressed out.
- It makes ‘that time’ a lil less gnarly; magnesium reduces symptoms of PMS e.g. bloating and mood swings, and as it is a muscle relaxant, it helps ease the cramps too!
Applying oil to the skin for absorption is way more effective that popping a pill, as the magnesium is taken into your cells directly rather than needing to pass through your digestive system first.
Unfortunately, your body is not super efficient at absorbing magnesium internally, likewise, taking magnesium orally can have a laxative effect! So if this happens then the magnesium will pass through pretty speedily, hence your body won’t have a chance to absorb it.
Additionally, your skin can regulate the absorption of the oil and takes in exactly what it needs (any extra is left on the skin and dries into a white powder) so there is no risk of a magnesium overdose.
To get the maximum relaxing benefits I recommend slathering it on about 20mins before bed.
Be warned – it can feel a lil itchy when you first put it on, but that will subside within a few mins.
